Opposition Leader Critiques Government Response

Bhubaneswar: Naveen Patnaik, the Leader of Opposition in Odisha and former Chief Minister, has publicly condemned the state government for its handling of the recent stampede in Puri that resulted in three fatalities.

Patnaik expressed his concerns on social media, stating, “While I do not wish to accuse the government of criminal negligence, their evident indifference has played a role in this unfortunate event. I urge immediate action to ensure the proper execution of the Adapa Bije, Bahuda, Suna Besha, and other significant #RathYatra rituals.”

He conveyed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy at Saradhabali, Puri, and prayed for the quick recovery of those injured in the incident.

The stampede, which occurred shortly after a chaotic crowd management situation during the #RathYatra that left many injured, has raised serious questions about the government's ability to maintain order during such events. Eyewitnesses noted that the initial assistance came from the relatives of the victims, with no official response to manage the overwhelming crowds, indicating a severe failure in duty.

Patnaik criticized the state government for attributing the delays in the chariot pulling to the will of Lord Jagannath, calling it an unacceptable excuse that obscures the administration's failure to act responsibly.

In a statement to the press, Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain explained that after the ceremonial closure of Darshan (Pahuda), a surge of devotees rushed towards the area, leading to the stampede between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m.

He reported that several individuals experienced breathlessness and were promptly taken to the hospital. Currently, three deaths have been confirmed, and six others are receiving treatment. The post-mortem examinations for the deceased are underway.

The victims have been identified as Pravati Das, Premkant Mohanty, and Basanti Sahoo.
